Set up in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the sole TLD meant for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to register john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased third-level domain names remained working.
